Where ships dock
South Franklin Street docks
Four docks in a row along South Franklin; the AJ Dock (southernmost) is a 10-minute walk to town, the others open straight onto it. The tram station is on the dock.
Typically 7 AM – 8 PM · Juneau often has late departures
All-aboard is in ship time. Check the daily programme and be back at the gangway 30 minutes early.
Top places near the pier
Walking times come from the app: straight-line distance plus 30% for streets, at an easy 4.5 km/h. Places further than an hour on foot show the distance instead.

Juneau's 1890s-style saloon a block from the docks — sawdust floor, swinging doors, live music, and Wyatt Earp's checked pistol over the bar.
Tracy's King Crab Shack
The waterfront crab shack beside the docks — king crab legs by the pound, crab bisque, and crab cakes, eaten at picnic tables in the drizzle.

The aerial tram from the cruise dock 1,800 feet up Mount Roberts — a restaurant, a nature center, a bald-eagle exhibit, and alpine trails with the ships far below.
Tracy Arm Fjord
A 30-mi fjord south of Juneau with two tidewater glaciers, icebergs and 3,000-ft walls — the full-day boat excursion (7–8 hours) that many ships also sail past on the way in.

The Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultural center downtown — a clan house inside, monumental art on the outside, exhibitions and a superb Native art shop.

The APK building's state museum — Tlingit and Haida art, the Russian era, the gold rush, and the whole story of the 49th state, in a modern building 10 minutes from the docks.
Jsayre64 · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons Perseverance Trail
Juneau's original road, now a 3-mi trail up Gold Creek into the mountains behind town past mine ruins and waterfalls — starts a 20-minute walk from the docks.
Macaulay Salmon Hatchery
DIPAC's working hatchery 3 mi from the docks — watch salmon climb the fish ladder in July–August, with aquarium tanks and a touch pool inside.
Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure
A botanical garden in the rainforest where upside-down trees hold flowers in their roots — a covered-cart ride climbs to a viewpoint over Juneau.

Alaska's most visited glacier, 13 mi from the docks — a half-mile-wide face calving into a lake, a Forest Service visitor center, and the flat 2-mi trail to Nugget Falls beside it.

A 377-foot waterfall pouring into Mendenhall Lake right beside the glacier face — the best photo in Juneau, at the end of an easy 1-mi trail from the visitor center.

Humpback whales feed in Juneau's waters all summer — every operator guarantees sightings from May to September.
Ready-made port days in AlaskaThings
Each is a timed plan in the app, starting and ending at the ship.
- Juneau: Whales & Glacier
The classic day, booked direct — whales, Mendenhall, crab, the tram - Juneau on Foot
Native art, the state museum, a mountain trail, a saloon
Getting around: what the app tells you
- Book direct, not through the ship
- The same whale boat, train or floatplane typically costs 30–60% less on the operator's own website than in the ship's excursion catalog. The ship's price buys one thing: the guarantee it will wait. In port towns this small, that's rarely worth the difference.
- Check whose clock you're on
- Ships often stay on Pacific time while Alaska runs an hour behind. Your phone switches; the ship's clocks don't. Set a manual alarm in ship time for all-aboard.
- Ask for the return guarantee
- Most Juneau whale-watch and glacier operators, and the White Pass railroad, promise to have you back before all-aboard or cover your way to the next port. If the operator offers it, the ship's markup buys nothing.
- The jewelry strip is not local
- The same chains fill the storefronts by the dock in every port and pay the cruise lines for the 'recommended store' map. Buy Native art at the heritage centers with the Silver Hand seal, and anything else a block or two back from the pier.
