Where ships dock
Montego Bay Cruise Port (Freeport)
Freeport is not walkable into town: take a licensed taxi (red PP plates) from the dispatch at the terminal — Doctor's Cave and the Hip Strip are about 10 minutes, Rose Hall 25. Agree the fare first, and allow extra time in the afternoon traffic back to the port.
Typically 8 AM – 5 PM · Jamaica keeps Eastern Standard Time all year — check whether your ship keeps a different time
All-aboard is in ship time. Check the daily programme and be back at the gangway 30 minutes early.
Top places near the pier
Walking times come from the app: straight-line distance plus 30% for streets, at an easy 4.5 km/h. Places further than an hour on foot show the distance instead.
Harbour Street Craft Market
Montego Bay's biggest craft market, rows of stalls selling carvings, straw work, T-shirts and paintings along Harbour Street downtown.
Walter Fletcher Beach
The public beach and small park on the bay at the downtown end of the Hip Strip, with calm water and a view of the ships across the harbour.

The heart of downtown Montego Bay, named for the Baptist deacon who led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion of enslaved people and was hanged here in 1832; he is a National Hero.

Pork Pit
A long-running open-air jerk joint at the airport end of the Hip Strip: jerk pork, chicken and ribs smoked over pimento wood, with festival and roast breadfruit.
The Hip Strip (Jimmy Cliff Boulevard)
Montego Bay's seafront strip of bars, jerk stands, souvenir stalls and beach clubs, renamed Jimmy Cliff Boulevard in honour of the reggae star from Somerton, St. James.
Margaritaville Montego Bay
The multi-level open-air bar and restaurant on the Hip Strip with a waterslide into the sea, a sundeck and trampolines on the water.

Montego Bay's most famous beach: a curve of fine sand and clear, calm water on the Hip Strip, run as a bathing club since the early 1900s and made famous in the 1920s when an English doctor praised its water as healing.
Dead End Beach
A free public beach at the end of Kent Avenue beside the airport runway — locals' sand, planes landing overhead, and one of the best sunset spots in Montego Bay.
Scotchies Montego Bay
The original Scotchies jerk centre on the Falmouth road at Coral Gardens: jerk pork and chicken cooked under zinc sheets on pimento logs, with festival, bammy and roast yam.
White Witch Golf Course
The Rose Hall resort's hilltop championship course, with sea views from most holes.

Getting around: what the app tells you
- Agree the fare, then get in
- Say where you're going and ask: 'How much, per person or for the car, US or Jamaican?' Agree before the door shuts, and pay at the end. For a round trip, agree the pickup time and pay when you're back at the port.
- Set an alarm on ship time
- Jamaica doesn't change its clocks. Ships often keep a different time. Check the time on the ship's app or a clock on board and set your phone alarm by that — and give yourself an hour's margin for traffic on the coast road.
- Beat the tour buses
- Dunn's River, Mystic Mountain and the Blue Hole fill up between 10 AM and 1 PM on ship days. Be first off the ship and first at the gate, or go after 1 PM when the tours head back.
