Where ships dock
Pier 68 / Brattøra (Kai 2 by Rockheim for some ships)
Across the station bridge into the old town: the market square in ten minutes, the cathedral in twenty. Shuttles on big ship days.
Typically 8 AM – 5 PM
All-aboard is in ship time. Check the daily programme and be back at the gangway 30 minutes early.
Top places near the pier
Walking times come from the app: straight-line distance plus 30% for streets, at an easy 4.5 km/h. Places further than an hour on foot show the distance instead.
Rockheim
The national museum of pop and rock in a converted grain warehouse on the pier — a glowing box on top, Norwegian music from the 1950s to today inside, with instruments to play and mixing desks to try.
Stiftsgården
The royal residence in Trondheim: the largest wooden palace in Scandinavia (1778), 140 rooms on Munkegata, with guided tours of the state rooms in summer.

Swedish National Heritage Board · No restrictions · Wikimedia Commons Trondheim Market Square (Torvet)
The central square with the column of Olav Tryggvason — the city's founder — used as a sundial, the Saturday farmers' market and the new market halls around it.

The red wooden bridge of 1861 with the carved 'Portal of Fortune' gates, looking along the river to the coloured warehouses on stilts — Trondheim's postcard.
Bakklandet
The old working-class quarter across the bridge: wooden houses, cobbles, the city's best cafés and the world's only bicycle lift (Trampe) pushing riders up the hill to Kristiansten Fortress.
Kristiansten Fortress
The 1681 fortress on the hill above Bakklandet, built after the great fire, with the best panorama of the city, the fjord and the cathedral.
Nidaros Cathedral
The largest medieval building in Scandinavia, built over the grave of St Olav from 1070, the goal of the pilgrim road and the coronation church of Norway's kings.
Concierge.2C · CC BY-SA 3.0 no · Wikimedia Commons Archbishop's Palace Museum
The medieval palace beside the cathedral: the archaeology of the site under glass, the original cathedral sculptures, and the vault with the Norwegian crown jewels.
Munkholmen
The islet in the fjord that has been a monastery, a fortress, a prison and a customs house, now a summer swimming spot with a café and guided tours of the fortress.

Richard Mortel from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia · CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons Ringve Music Museum
Norway's national museum of musical instruments in a manor house and botanical garden on the Lade peninsula: 2,000 instruments, guided tours where the guides play them, and a good café in the garden.

Getting around: what the app tells you
- Ship time, tender time, and the last boat back
- All-aboard is in ship's time, which is not always local time — check the daily programme. In Geiranger the last tender back runs 30–60 minutes before all-aboard and the queue is longest right then; in Flåm the train and the fjord boat both run late on two-ship days. Be at the gangway 30 minutes early. The ship waits for its own excursions, not for you.
- Book the operators direct, not the ship's desk
- The Flåm Railway, Nærøyfjord boat, Loen Skylift, Fløibanen, Lysefjord and Geiranger cruises all sell online at fixed prices; the ship's excursion desk sells the same seats with a mark-up and a bus you didn't need. Book direct weeks ahead for anything with limited seats, and check the port's arrival time against the departure you pick — with an hour's margin.
- Check the webcam before you pay for the view
- Dalsnibba, the Loen Skylift, Fløyen, Ulriken and Stegastein all have live webcams; the mountain can be in cloud while the pier is sunny. Look before you buy the bus or the lift, and if the top is grey, do the fjord boat or the museum first and go up later — weather in the fjords changes in an hour.
